Why a Deli? By Sam Zeitlin.

Some of my earliest food memories revolve around the joy of savoring bagels and visiting Jewish delis with my loved ones.

To me, the trip to the deli was a sacred ritual during the mundanity of suburban life—  Sometimes, even holier than the one to the synagogue. :)

At the Deli, you weren't just a customer; you were family.

Always greeted with open arms.

You could feel the warmth of the waiters as they approached you with the specials, always with a smile and snappy energy. And before you could place your order, a food runner food runner would arrive with a bowl of the most amazing sour pickles.

"A nova platter, please", "I'll have a corned beef sandwich", "an egg and cheese bagel", all these orders played on repeat everywhere as you stared at the walls, covered with photos of the Supremes, Sammy Davis Jr., Woody Allen, even Barbara Streisand!

The deli was a time capsule delicately packaged and incredibly unique.

After admiring the star-studded memorabilia on the walls, the excitement would build until a can of Dr. Brown's Soda was placed before me. With a quick flick, I'd open it and pour it into a red tumbler, watching as the clear soda turned into a rich, dark beige.

While I sipped on my soda, I remember visiting with family and friends, discussing life events, kibitzing with other families across the room. You always ran into someone’s aunt at the Deli!

Jewish holidays, weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, the deli was always there, grounding our family during significant life events. Even during difficult times, such as the passing of a loved one, memories of deli platters filled with smoked pastrami, turkey, lox, assorted pickles, and cold salads come flooding back.

The Jewish deli was more than just a place to eat; it grounded our family and allowed us to connect with our cultural identity and heritage.

That's why we want, and need, for Zeitlin's to have a storefront.
